Five years later and I am still shaken to the core and brought to tears when I think of the magnitude of destruction and devastation. My thoughts drift to the thousands of lives taken from us — the heroes, the victims, the families and friends — all for reasons I will never fully comprehend. I hold my loved ones just a bit tighter today, as I am reminded once again of the fragility of human life. Today, we remember… we pray… we hope… we move forward. Peace to you and yours. xoxo

Joy is…

JOY

Joy is… a hot cup of strong coffee… being inspired by the ease at which my children live in the moment… spending time as a family… a good night’s sleep and waking up without a migraine… having more energy and strength than yesterday… the feel of the Earth beneath my feet… plans to spend the day with someone special… watching the sun come out just after a rainstorm…

I really needed this reminder today.

Edited to add: Joy is… your comments! Oh, yes, I do love the comments below and reading how you define a joyful life. What are your sources of joy?

More Useless Facts You Never Really Wanted to Know About Me

Monday, September 4th, 2006

I snagged this meme from Madness… feel free to join in and snag it for yourself.

1. Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, find line 4. Write down what it says:
“of a dragonfly, or when it shines through misty rain, or even”
from 365 Tao by Deng Ming-Dao

2. Stretch your left arm out as far as you can…what do you touch first?
A collage my daughter made me a few days ago.

3. What is the last thing you watched on TV?
Supernova. (Go Lukas. Or Magni. Or Dilana. I just can’t pick a fav… I’m torn between the three.)

4. WITHOUT LOOKING, what time is it?
12:14 a.m.?

5. Now look at the clock, what is the actual time?
12:31 a.m. (yikes, I need to get to bed soon.)

6. With the exception of the computer, what can you hear?
Jack Johnson singing to me.

7. When did you last step outside?
As dinner was cooking, to take food scraps to the compost and check on the garden (unfortunately I found three half eaten tomatoes… grr, our garden has visitors.)

8. What are you wearing?
Long sleeved shirt, long pants, socks, and I am wrapped up in a cozy, knit wrap… I am on my way to bed and I am freezing!

9. When did you last laugh?
About ten minutes ago while reading someone’s blog… although already I cannot remember what exactly it was I found funny.

10. Seen anything weird lately?
Yes, this eBay auction (Damn, I really should have sold my smiling red pepper!) and this piece of ‘art’ (if you can call it art; it’s just an obscene cry for attention and publicity, in my opinion).

11. What did you dream last night?
I don’t really remember… something about my youngest daughter, I think.

12. What’s on the walls of the room you’re in?
Yellow paint on one wall (that I have grown to loathe), a strand of hemp twine with various photos of chairs hanging from it (I am in the midst of a chair photo fetish right now), the rest of the walls are off white with various pieces of art on them.

13. What do you think of this survey?
So far, so good.

14. What’s the last film you saw?
I am not sure, but I think it was Little Black Book.

15. If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy first?
Definitely a new vehicle… probably a Lexus RX Hybrid with all the bells and whistles — you know, just because I could.

16. Tell me something about you that I don’t know.
When I was in the fifth or six grade, every weekend my friends and I would hang out at the roller skating rink. There was a boy that I had a huge crush on… he was a few years older than me and didn’t even know I existed, but neveryoumind, I was totally smitten. So smitten in fact, that once when I was skating and he smiled at me (or in my direction at least), I became a bit disheveled and skated smack into the wall, collapsing to the floor. Needless to say, I was mortified. Well, to make a short story even longer… years later, that same dreamy guy asked me out on a date when we were in high school, and my heart was crushed to find out he was a total loser. One moment I remember from that tortuous date: ‘Melanie, I really want to get to know you better… what kind of shampoo do you use?’ Ugh, I was such a dork magnet.

19. If you could change one thing about the world, what would you change?
Now this is a tough question… there is so much I would love to change. It would be a toss up between putting an end to environmental dangers, child abuse or war.

20. Do you like to dance?
Yes, sometimes.

21. Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her?
Been there, done that. But for meme’s sake, I love the name Fiona. or Sofia.

22. Boy?
I love the name Gavin.

23. Would you ever consider living abroad?
Maybe… I have never been abroad so I cannot say for sure whether it would be a right fit for me. But given the right circumstances, I would be game to give it a try!

Out of Sorts
A journal page inspired by design.

Finding inspiration in a magazine: I was drawn to the spread shown below which I found in a page from a fashion magazine. I was particularly inspired by the red background with pale yellow polka dots which I emulated in the journal page above using paint and stamps.
