Music Makers

Music Makers. Collage on wood. 5″ x 7″.

The Process: Here is a peak into the creation process of this collage and how I dealt with any challenges.

music makersHere was my first plateau. I added acrylics and glazes to a sheet of music to create the background, and I added the image of the boy. Then I went blank. I didn’t know what direction to head next. I wanted something in the top right of the collage, text perhaps. I jotted down phrases, browsed through quotes, but nothing seemed to fit. I let the unfinished collage sit for a few days while I worked on other projects.

music makersWhen I came across William Shaughnessy’s quote, I thought it was perfect. I toyed around with fonts and placement in PSP, until I had this image. I had my mind set on white text, but I wasn’t quite sure how to accomplish it. I considered stamping with acrylic paint, but my gut told me to try something else.

music makersI settled on printing white text with a light greyish-blue background on tissue paper in hopes that it would remain somewhat translucent and allow the background underneath to peak through. Overall, I am content with the result, but if I had it all over to do again, I would have cut out the text and place each individual word instead of adhering the quote as a whole.

Just found your site via Hope. It is SO lovely! And that artwork by your daughter makes me so eager for when my daughter is old to hold a crayon in her hand without eating it (as is the habit of 10 month old babies!).
    I’ll definitely be back!

Cool technique with the text on tissue paper– I’ve never tried that, but will have to, now! I like the way you outlined around the boy in white– gives a neat glowy effect.
